LakeWood was started by William Hall at the advice of his 12-year old daughter Whitney who said “You need a bigger horse!!!” after considering the prospect of William climbing onto her barely-15-hand-high paint gelding. William agreed. He built a barn (alone once again with his welder for company over two years) and then drove up to see Rod Derrer at Tom Miller’s Pinnacle Farms in Illinois. A few weeks later William and Donna drove back up to Illinois to bring home a son of Doura Sensation (“Sunny”) and a maiden mare with a flashy look, "Ann". And so for William began the long road toward becoming a “horse person”.
In 2002,
William made his first trip to the National Show and Sale in
Springfield, IL. What a
learning experience! Two
mares joined the home team, Carson’s Queen of Diamonds and
Boulder Bluff Del.
Fescue-related foaling disasters followed.
More learning experiences of the worst kind, but
eventually a healthy colt "Stormy"
resulted in 2004. Stormy
was imprinted the hard way, being born in the pasture during a
rainstorm for six hours and rescued from death by weeks of
intensive care and months of bucket feeding.
(He’s quite healthy and growing like a weed now.)
When do the learning experiences ease up??
In the spring
of 2004, William went back to the National Show and Sale, had a
very interesting discussion with the auctioneer smack-dab in the
middle of the Sale, and with the kindly support of the
auctioneer and the other bidders, brought home Cedarlane
Skipper, the Reserve Grand Champion stallion, and TJC Goliath,
a yearling that caught William’s eye.
Goliath turned out to be yet another truly gentle giant
but for sire purposes Skipper was head and shoulders (literally)
above the rest.
Skipper’s first crop of foals are just now arriving and are
magnificent!
Here are the mares and stallion in the current lineup for LakeWood Clydesdales:
Our current stallion breeding to all our mares, Skipper is a son of SBH Phoenix. Skipper was the Reserve Champion Stallion at the 2004 National Show and Sale in Springfield, IL. His first two foals are on the ground, a colt (LakeWood Skipjack) by Boulder Bluff Del and a filly (LakeWood Brigantine) born on December 5, 2005 to Carson's Queen of Diamonds. (He's not for sale, sorry).
Carson's Queen of Diamonds
"Diamond" is shown here with her new foal, a filly to be named LakeWood Brigantine, born Dec. 5, 2005 (just two days ago as I write this caption). Despite having just foaled, Diamond is one big pretty girl. (She's not for sale, sorry.)
Enchantress Ann of Pinnacle
Ann is a five year old mare who will be bred this year to Cedarlane Skipper. She is also first in line for harness training. Boulder Bluff Del
I have never managed to get a flattering picture of this mare, but her beauty is in her ability to put a foal on the ground successfully. This year's (2005) foal is the colt LakeWood SkipJack.
LakeWood Skipjack
Jack as a one-day-old foal and at five weeks of age. He was born October 24, 2005. His sire is Cedarlane Skipper, dam is Boulder Bluff Del.
LakeWood Brigantine
Brig was born in the morning of December 6, 2005, a filly out of dam Carson's Queen of Diamonds and sire Cedarlane Skipper.
